Young Lionesses to compete in UEFA Women's EURO second round at both U17 and U19 level next year

WOMEN'S & GIRLS' FOOTBALL: FIND OUT MORE

England women’s under-17s and under-19s teams now know who they need to overcome if they are to qualify for their respective European Championships next summer.

Places at the two EUROs are decided via a Nations League-style format, where teams can be relegated or promoted in two rounds of qualification.

Both England WU17s and WU19s progressed from round one of qualification earlier this year to ensure they were in today’s round two draws at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

At both groups, there are seven League A groups for each tournament and only the winner progresses to next summer’s finals alongside the hosts, unless the host team win their pool and then the best runner-up also advances.

For England WU17s, they will take on Norway, Belgium and Croatia in Group A2, hoping to book a spot at the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship finals in Estonia, which is due to take place between 14-26 May.

As for the WU19s, the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship will be held in Belgium from 18-30 July and England have been joined in Group A4 by Spain, Slovenia and Belarus.

The Under-19 draw was conducted by England WU19 forward Lucy Watson, after the Young Lionesses won the UEFA Respect Fair Play trophy at this summer’s Finals, when the team exited the competition at the group stage.

Whichever team finishes bottom of their League A group will be relegated to League B for the start of the 2023-24 qualification campaign.

The hosts and the dates for each group’s mini-tournament were also discussed this morning and will be announced in due course.
