Manchester City defender recalls her summer of being a fan as she speaks about her return to the England squad
Esme Morgan admits she’s been enjoying life in the England camp this week, as the squad prepare for games against USA and Czech Republic.

The Manchester City defender previously featured with the senior squad in early 2021 as the country emerged from COVID-19 lockdowns with regular training camps under interim coach Hege Riise.

But the 21 year old revealed that what she’s walked back into this week feels like a world away from those sessions at St. George’s Park.

“I’ve loved it, I’ve had such a good time coming back into the environment,” she said.

“I know quite a lot of the girls from club level as well as previous camps and it’s been so much fun to just catch up with everyone but also to train with them and be around this environment.

“The standard is so high and I’ve just really enjoyed the challenge of it.
“There were a few training camps during COVID, when we had internal games and things like that but it wasn’t really the same as this, even though a lot of the faces are.

“It’s now a different atmosphere with us being able to mix and socialise together more and it’s just been a joy to be a part of what is such a historic squad now.”

Sheffield-born Morgan, who caught the eye of England boss Sarina Wiegman with her performances for Manchester City, readily admits she can still feel the buzz of this summer’s success at the EUROs.

And the former Eccleshall Rangers player who represented her grassroots team in the Sheffield & District Sunday League until she was 15 now can’t wait to sample Wembley again when the Lionesses face USA in front of a sold-out crowd.

“I loved watching the girls over the summer, just as a fan…it was so much fun,” she added.

“Seeing them dominate all of the matches they played in and then I was fortunate enough to be at the final.

“The atmosphere was incredible, so that just makes me excited for the game against USA and experiencing the same sort of crowd at Wembley.”
