Report: England Women's Blind 0-0 Germany (0-1 after shootout)
After the teams couldn't be separated in their seventh place play-off, the tie was decided from the penalty spot in Birmingham
The England women’s blind team suffered a narrow penalty shootout defeat to Germany following a 0-0 draw in the IBSA World Championship seventh-place play-off on Saturday morning.
The Para Lionesses were edged out by 1-0 in the shootout, after Germany ‘keeper Svenja Bartels made two saves to deny Alice Hopkins and Ayman Hafiz following Samantha Gough’s earlier shot wide.
The teams couldn’t be separated in the regular 30 minutes, although there were chances at both ends as each of the teams each looked to find their first goal of the tournament.
For England, Katie Christopher made some decent saves while Samantha Gough was a constant menace to the Germany back line.
The second half followed a similar trend with Gough shooting narrowly over from England’s best chance, and after the clock was run down, the game was to be decided from the penalty shootout.
And it was the Germans who sealed seventh place in the tournament, thanks to Bartels’ heroics while England keeper Megan Brierley also made a save to deny the Germans with their second spot-kick
England: 13 Katie Christopher, 2 Selina Prieto, 4 Ayman Hafiz, 7 Lucia Wyrwantowicz, 9 Samantha Gough.
Substitutes: 1 Megan Brierley, 3 Natasha Mead, 5 Alice Hopkins, 11 Emma Stead
Head coach: Michelle Wilcock
