Young Lions miss out on U19 EURO Finals spot despite victory in their final group game in Chesterfield
England men’s under-19s ended their UEFA U19 EURO elite qualifying round games with a 2-0 win over Turkey but miss out on a spot at this summer’s Finals.
Second-half goals from Amario Cozier-Duberry and George Hall proved enough to get the win in Chesterfield for Simon Rusk’s team.
But the result was only enough to secure second spot in their group following Iceland’s victory over Hungary at St. George’s Park.
And it’s Iceland who progress to the Finals in Malta this summer, as they finish top to go through with seven points following their crucial win over England on Saturday.
While there were no goals in the first half, England enjoyed the better of the game by playing at a high intensity.
With captain Darko Gyabi and his midfield partner Charlie Webster controlling the flow of the game from the centre, the Young Lions worked themselves into several good situations without being able to break the deadlock.
But they didn’t have to wait long after the break, as Cozier-Duberry showed great control in the area to twist and turn inside the box before calmly slotting home into the bottom corner to put England ahead.
England had James Beadle to thank for keeping them ahead on the hour mark too, as the keeper made a stunning save at point-blank range to deny Turkey’s Emre Demir.
The importance of that save was illustrated moments later when Hall doubled the advantage with a bullet header to make it 2-0.
England comfortably managed the game from there, but could do nothing about what was happening in the other game where Iceland also grabbed two second-half goals to progress.
