The coaching structure for England men’s development teams has been confirmed ahead of the new 2022-23 season.

Our Young Lions will be in action across the pathway from MU15 through to MU21* level during the new campaign, whether that’s in UEFA European Championship competitions, a FIFA U20 World Cup or international tournaments and games for the MU18s and MU20s.

Starting with our MU21s, led by Lee Carsley and his staff, it’s a case of preparation for next summer’s UEFA U21 EURO Finals in Georgia and Romania and they begin in September with games against Italy and Germany.

Our MU20s will be travelling to Indonesia for the FIFA U20 World Cup next summer, led by Ian Foster as head coach following their qualification for the tournament by virtue of their success in the UEFA U19 EURO Finals in Slovakia last season.

There are head coach roles for both Simon Rusk and Neil Ryan, following their appointments as England national coaches in May.

Former Brighton & Hove Albion coach Rusk will take charge of the new group of MU19s, who will start our defence of the U19 EURO title in September with games against Montenegro, Georgia and Denmark in the first qualifying round. Rusk will be assisted this season by Andy Edwards.

And ex Manchester United academy coach Ryan will be leading the new group of MU18s into the 2022-23 season, with last season’s head coach Ryan Garry moving across to coach the MU17s as they compete for a place at next summer’s UEFA U17 EURO in Hungary and also target qualification for the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup in Peru.

They will kick-off the season with the first qualifying round against Israel, Georgia and Lithuania in October.

Last season’s MU17s head coach Tom Curtis is now our youth development phase lead, and other new appointments for 2022-23 include Greg Lincoln as MU16s head coach and Will Antwi as MU15s head coach.

There will also be coaching support from Gifton Noel-Williams, Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Quinton Fortune across the development teams, following their appointment on the FA’s and PFA’s joint flagship England Elite Coach Programme (EECP).

The EECP was introduced by the FA and the PFA in 2017 to create opportunities for coaches from historically under-represented groups to work with the England national teams to gain international coaching experience at the highest levels of English football. The programme aims to build a bigger and more diverse coaching talent pipeline for the future.

This will be the third intake of coaches on the EECP and in recent seasons, we’ve seen the likes of Chris Powell, Paul Nevin, Michael Johnson, Jason Euell and Omer Riza working with England teams on the EECP who have gained valuable international coaching experience.

“It’s pleasing and exciting to confirm our staffing for the 2022-23 season,” said our head of coaching, Tim Dittmer.

“Following the numerous challenges COVID presented us with over the past few seasons, we embark on the upcoming campaign as a relatively new group of national coaches.

“It’s key we identify the needs of our players and programmes and, in turn, place our staff in the most appropriate positions to support the various journeys.

“This coming season we have notable FIFA and UEFA tournaments at MU17, MU19 and MU20 age groups. These provide valuable opportunities for our players to pitch themselves against the best other nations have to offer, under unique international tournament experience.

“Our MU15, MU16 and MU18 age groups carefully provide players with the opportunity to show the best version of themselves in international events and games both in England and across Europe.

“As always, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the excellent work that is taking place across all academies and thank them for the support and collaboration which maximise all of our interactions with the players.”
