Chloe Kelly and Kelly Smith join Jill Scott and Kyle Walker on Lionesses: Down Under connected by EE to look ahead to Sunday's World Cup final

It might be a Word Cup final but Chloe Kelly insists she is approaching it like any other game, stressing England still have a job to do and it is important the Lionesses focus on their own game – even if they do have a little bit of inside knowledge on Sunday’s opponents Spain.

Kelly has already etched her name in English sporting history by scoring the winning goal as the Lionesses lifted a first major trophy at last summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO.

So like the majority of the England squad, Kelly is well-versed when it comes to playing in high-pressure matches.

And she said: “We keep saying round the hotel, ‘what are you doing on Sunday?’ A World Cup Final, it’s amazing. This is what dreams are made of.

“For me, it feels like another game. Of course, it’s the World Cup Final and there’s a lot of buzz around it, but I think every game for us is very important and every game getting to this moment was very special.

“But a World Cup Final, when you grow up and watch these games, it was a dream to play in one, so I think everyone is of course very excited, but we have a job to do.”

Chloe Kelly & Kelly Smith on Lionesses: Down Under

Three of the most popular England Women's players of all time appeared on today's episode

Only one of Spain’s 23-player squad features for a club outside of the country’s domestic league and nine of those are on the books of Barcelona, who England’s Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh have played for since last summer.

And speaking to Jill Scott and Kyle Walker on Friday’s episode of Lionesses: Down Under connected by EE, Kelly said: “They’re very technical. I think it will be a great game to watch as a fan. With Lucy [Bronze] and Keira [Walsh] playing for Barcelona, we have a lot of insight into their players which is great for us.

“To see Lucy and Keira, the changes they’ve made since they went to Barcelona, we know the great football they play in Spain. But I think we can focus on ourselves and how we can break them down. We have a lot of quality in this team, it’s very exciting.”

The Lionesses’ playing squad of 23 players rightly grab most of the headlines but Kelly was quick to shift the focus onto the coaching and backroom staff.

She said: “It’s amazing to be part of such a special group of players and staff. The background work that the staff do, no one really sees it.

“We have a great set of players and staff. Everyone always sees the team on the pitch, but the hours that the staff put in day to day is really what’s behind us and gets us to these moments. I’m proud of the journey we’ve had so far, Sunday will just be amazing.”

Kelly honed her craft from a young age by playing with her five older brothers in the cages of west London, alongside starring for her beloved Queens Park Rangers.

Growing up, Kelly would hop on the 92 bus from her Ealing home and travel to Wembley Stadium just to buy a matchday programme. Then last summer, she scored one of the most important goals in the iconic ground’s history.

So what is her advice to any young boy or girl playing grassroots football who is hoping to follow in her footsteps?

“Just enjoy every moment and play with a smile on your face,” she said. “Just play at any opportunity you get because it flies by.

“I was a young girl not too long ago looking up to Kelly [Smith] and Jill [Scott]. Kelly was my idol growing up and now I’m sat with her [on the couch of Lionesses: Down Under], so I’m really nervous!”

The Arsenal and England legend is widely considered to be one of the most talented footballers to ever play for the Lionesses, someone who inspired a generation of young girls and a host of the current squad.

Now Smith is working in the media and attended England’s quarter-final and semi-final, before joining her former team-mate Scott and co-host Kyle Walker on the set of Lionesses: Down Under connected by EE.

Smith said: “Winning the EURO last year was fantastic and if they were to win the World Cup, what that would do for our game [in England], I just feel so proud to be English and to be able to support them from afar. I have goosebumps.

“It is amazing what they have done so far and they have captivated the nation once again and got even more fans onboard.

“I can’t wait. You have said it is 48 hours away. I want it to be tomorrow because I am just buzzing for the game.

“In the EURO, I was sat next to Kaz Carney and we were both singing, dancing and crying so I hope to be doing the same again on Sunday!”
