Young Lionesses win the MIMA Cup out in Spain
Denny Draper made it five goals in two games out in Spain as England women’s under-17s beat Scotland 5-0 to win the MIMA Cup.
The Leicester City striker bagged a hat-trick on Saturday as the Young Lionesses defeated the Netherlands 3-1 in a friendly before Natalie Henderson’s side beat the Philippines 2-0 on Monday to book their place in the final of the friendly tournament.
And Draper scored another two goals against Scotland on Thursday and was joined on the scoresheet by Erica Parkinson and Laila Harbert at the Pinatar Arena.
After the initial ten minutes, England really settled into the game and Parkinson went close on a few occasions in the opening quarter of an hour.
The Young Lionesses took the lead midway through the first half when good work from Parkinson released Vera Jones out wide and her cross found Draper. The striker’s first effort was blocked but she scored from close range with the rebound.
The second then arrived just after the half-hour mark when Lola Brown’s cross was not fully cleared and Jones’ shot from outside the area was spilled by Scotland’s Braelynn Galt, leaving Draper to scramble home.
Parkinson then added a third just before half-time and the victory was rounded off in the final ten minutes by captain Harbert.
A cross-field ball by Abby Kay found Omotara Junaid on the right-hand side and when her short cross was cleared outside the box, Harbert was able to score low to the goalkeeper’s right.
The Arsenal youngster then made it 5-0 soon after when she drove forward and from the edge of the area, once again scored low to the ‘keeper’s right.
