By 2028, The FA’s ambition is to increase the quality and quantity of grassroots football pitches and facilities across England. There are two success measures that underpin this ambition, delivering 12,000 quality grass pitches, and 300 more 3G Artificial Grass Pitches.
Developing high quality, sustainable football facilities is essential for helping clubs grow, attract players, and create thriving community environments. To build more and improve existing facilities, The FA, in conjunction with the Football Foundation, County FA network and Sport England, provide a range support & advice for clubs, leagues, local authorities, education providers and community groups, seeking to develop and improve their own facilities.
Developing facilities
Investment to support the development of new and existing facilities is held by the Football Foundation, who are the Premier League, The FA and Government’s charity. As the biggest sport charity in the country, they are a unique partnership between key football partners with a shared goal – ensuring every community in England has a great place to play.
Whether your organisation is planning a new 3G Artificial Grass Pitch, upgrading changing rooms, improving grass pitches or exploring ownership of a community facility, The FA and Football Foundation have the tools, funding and guidance to help you take the next step.

Technical standards
Creating safe, high quality and sustainable places to play is at the heart of The FA’s mission to enable the grassroots game to thrive. To support affiliated clubs, leagues, facility operators and partners, The FA provides a comprehensive set of Technical Standards that ensure football facilities across England are designed, built and maintained to consistent, trusted levels of quality.
Below you will find the latest standards for football facilities, covering everything from pitch dimensions to goalpost sizes. These reflect the different needs and aspirations of football at all levels within the national game. By following these standards, clubs and partners can confidently deliver football facilities that bring people together, strengthen local communities, improve physical health and mental wellbeing, and increase participation across all formats of the game.
