We answer key questions such as when is the Women’s European Qualifiers draw for UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 and how will the new format work?

England’s defence of the UEFA Women’s EURO title will begin in April, with the Lionesses will find out who they will face at the Women’s European Qualifying draw.

The draw takes place on Tuesday 5 March, from around 12pm GMT, at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon and will be streamed live on UEFA.com

With a different system of qualification in place for EURO 2025, you can find out more about how the draw will work and who the Lionesses could face below as we look to answer some of your key questions ahead of the draw and next year’s finals in Switzerland.

Who will England play?

England are in Pot 2 of the League A seedings and our group will consist of a team from Pot 1, Pot 3 and Pot 4. The seedings are as follows:-

Pot 1: Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands
Pot 2: England, Denmark, Italy, Austria
Pot 3: Iceland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway
Pot 4: Republic of Ireland, Finland, Poland, Czechia

Can I watch the draw?

Yes, it will be streamed live via UEFA.com from midday GMT on Tuesday 5 March.

How does UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 qualification work in general?

UEFA Women's EURO 2025 will see 16 teams, including the hosts Switzerland, compete at the finals. Before then, 51 countries will take part in a ten-month qualification campaign which will play out in the same format as the UEFA Women’s Nations League.

The results in the 2023-24 Women’s Nations League have determined which league the teams will compete in, with 16 in Leagues A and B and 19 in League C.

The countries will then be split into mini-qualification groups of four (or one group of three in League C) and will play six matches between April and July, facing each opponent home and away.

After their six qualification matches, the top two from each of the four League A groups will automatically qualify for the finals, with the other seven places being determined by play-offs.

How does the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 play-off system work?

After the initial qualification groups, there will then be two rounds of play-offs to help determine the other seven teams who will reach the finals in Switzerland. The first round of play-offs will be split into two ‘paths’. In the first path, those who finish third and fourth in League A will play the five group winners and three best runners-up from League C, with the eight victors progressing to round two.

The second path for the first round of play-offs sees the four group winners and two best-ranked runners-up in League B take on the other two runners-up and four third-placed teams in League B, with six sides moving on to the second round of play-offs.

Seeding will then come into play for the teams remaining in round two of the play-offs, as the seven highest-ranked teams are then drawn in seven ties against the other sides. Those seven winners will then progress to the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 finals.

Will there be promotion and relegation during UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 qualification?

The answer is yes, with the results impacting the next UEFA Women's Nations League in 2025-27. In League A, the winners, runners-up and third-placed teams will stay in League A.
