The Three Lions captain reflects on the thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16

Harry Kane believes the Three Lions’ 3-2 victory over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 was “one of England’s greatest ever wins”.

Jude Bellingham scored twice in the first half before Kane netted from the penalty spot after the break as Thomas Tuchel’s side played over 40 minutes with 10 men following Jarell Quansah’s red card.

The England captain conceded a penalty which was converted by Raul Jimenez to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes of normal time remaining, but the Three Lions defended superbly late on to seal a memorable knockout win.

Kane insists the nature of the victory made it one of the nation’s best of all time, with a quarter-final against Norway on Saturday the reward for Tuchel and his squad.

Speaking after the game in Mexico City, Kane said: “I think it’s got to go down as one of England’s greatest ever wins.

“Considering the circumstances, the knockout [stages] of the World Cup, and just the way we’ve done it.

“We’re very proud to represent England and wear this badge and you can only prove that by doing what we’ve done today.

“So, it definitely gives us more belief. I’m sure it’ll give the fans more belief, knowing we can come through difficult games like that.

“So, for now, we just enjoy the celebrations and get ready for the next one.”

Reflecting on the match, which featured five goals, two penalties, a red card and more than 11 minutes of added time in the second half, Kane added: “It was a crazy game.

“We had to fight and we had to find something. I've just been singing, I can't really talk. The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.

“It was one of those days where the ref gave a lot against us. In the end it didn't matter. I'm happy.”
