England Women to play North Macedonia and Luxembourg under new charge of Sarina Wiegman

New England Women’s head coach Sarina Wiegman has selected her first squad, as the 2023 World Cup qualifying campaign kicks-off in September.

The Lionesses will start their season against North Macedonia at Southampton’s St. Mary’s Stadium on Friday 17 September before facing a trip to play Luxembourg four days later.

After starting her new role at St. George’s Park last week, Wiegman has already taken in games since the start of the new Barclays FA WSL season, including Arsenal’s thrilling opening weekend win over last season’s champions Chelsea.

And Wiegman has picked a 25-strong squad for the games with the target being qualification for the next World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in just less than two years.

The squad includes a number of uncapped players too with spots for Katie Zelem and Esme Morgan, who have been involved in senior training camps over the last year but still await their debuts.

There's also a place for Chelsea defender Jess Carter, who was last involved at senior level almost four years ago when she made her Lionesses debut in a win over Kazakhstan in November 2017.

Aside from that, there’s a recall for goalkeeper Mary Earps while the group also retains an experienced core with the likes of Steph Houghton, Jill Scott, Nikita Parris and Ellen White all present.

The squad will meet up at St. George’s Park following this weekend’s BFAWSL fixtures to begin their preparations for the North Macedonia game.

Supporters can be part of the action once again too, as England kick off their new era under Sarina Wiegman.

Tickets for the match against North Macedonia at St Mary’s on Friday 17 September [7pm BST] are priced at £15 for adults and £2.50 for children.  Concessions and group discounts are also available.
