Gareth visits Chelsea Pensioners
England boss kicks-off Remembrance Week with a visit to Royal Hospital Chelsea
Ahead of Remembrance Week, Gareth Southgate recently paid a visit to the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
The England manager spent time with the Chelsea Pensioners, dressed in their iconic scarlet uniforms, to learn more about how the remarkable men and women have served their country.
The Royal Hospital Chelsea has looked after elderly veterans of the British Army for over 300 years and the visit acted as a reminder of the sacrifice so many have made to defend the nation's freedoms.
The Pensioners continue to work in the wider community through educational visits and fundraising for military charities.
“I have to say it was an amazing experience," said Southgate.
"I’ve never been before, so to see how well looked after everybody who lives there was something to behold.
"To be able to sit and chat, laugh and have my leg pulled by the ex-soldiers, it was quite humbling really because you know what they’ve given of their lives for our country.
"When they were serving, they would’ve been at an age similar to what our players are now and many would also have very similar backgrounds.”
