England's 2022 FIFA World Cup draw DR Test

England will start their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign on the opening day of the tournament against Iran on Monday 21 November

England men’s senior team will face Iran, the United States of America and one of Wales, Scotland or Ukraine in the group stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The draw was made at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center in Qatar on Friday evening, with Three Lions head coach Gareth Southgate among those in attendance.

It means England will kick off their World Cup campaign on the opening day of the tournament, Monday 21 November, against Iran, who they are yet to face in a FIFA World Cup. The match will be held at the Khalifa International Stadium and kick-off at 1pm GMT

This will be followed on Friday 25 November by the USA at the Al Bayt Stadium (7pm GMT), in a repeat of the 1950 (1-0) and 2010 World Cups (1-1).

And the Three Lions’ third group match will be against one of either Wales, Scotland or Ukraine on Tuesday 29 November - the last two of which they faced during the run to the final of EURO 2020. This game will be staged at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium at 7pm GMT.

The tournament will consist of 32 teams and take place between Monday 21 November and Sunday 18 December.

England were among eight teams in Pot 1 for the draw, along with hosts Qatar, Belgium, France, Argentina, Spain and Portugal.

The pots were based on the FIFA Men’s World Ranking released on March 31, with hosts Qatar joining the seven highest-ranked sides in Pot 1.

The balls in the four pots were then drawn into the eight four-team groups for this year’s World Cup.

There were a number of constraints relating to the draw, starting with hosts Qatar having a different coloured ball to ensure they were in Group A and playing in the tournament’s opening match, which will be against Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium on Monday 21 November.

Where possible, FIFA look to ensure no group has more than one team from the same qualification zone. But with Europe having 13 teams competing in the tournament, it meant each group had to have at least one but no more than two European sides.

This principle was also followed for the three placeholder balls for the European play-off winner (Wales v Scotland or Ukraine) and two victorious intercontinental play-off sides, with Australia or UAE (AFC team) set to face Peru (CONMEBOL); and Costa Rica (CONCACAF) taking on New Zealand (OFC).

For England, they were the first team drawn in Group B and were followed by the USA from Pot 2, Iran from Pot 3 and the European play-off winner from Pot 4, which is between Wales, Scotland and Ukraine.

Scotland and Ukraine face each other in a play-off but the dates have yet to be decided, before then taking on Wales for a place in the Finals.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will then conclude with the Final at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on Sunday 18 December.
