If I could…with Reece James

Written by:

Frank Smith

England and Chelsea defender Reece James becomes the latest to answer a host of questions starting with ‘If I could’

1) If I could…play alongside one player from the history of world football, it would be…
…Cristiano Ronaldo. Even as a Chelsea man, I have always looked up to him and idolised him. He has won so many trophies and so many honours.

2) If I could…improve one part of my game today, it would be…
…to make my left foot as good as my right foot. That would be one thing to change. My left foot is pretty good already but I would still choose that.

3) If I could…take one part of an England team-mate’s game, it would be…
…Kyle Walker’s pace. He is lightning.

4) If I could…go back to one event in history, it would be…
…winning the Champions League, just to experience it again. Hopefully I will have the chance to do that again any way but it was the best. Growing up at Chelsea, coming all the way through and then playing in a Champions League final against such a tough opposition, where we were holding on for much of the second half because they had so many good players and chances to score, so when the final whistle went, the atmosphere and the scenes were just crazy.

5) If I could…change one thing about the world, it would be…
…stopping children going hungry. Marcus [Rashford] has done a lot of work to help children not go to bed hungry and I think that is one thing that no child deserves. It is something which is out of their control and I don’t think it should happen. I personally try to help as much as I can with the Felix Project by helping them distribute food to less fortunate people who maybe don’t have the money for their meals.

6) If I could…change one thing about football, it would be…
…VAR. I would just take it out.

James v Bellingham | Roommates

Reece James and Jude Bellingham have their friendship tested in the latest episode of Roommates

7) If I could…give my eight-year-old self one bit of advice, it would be…
…that a lot of people growing up used to tell me to work hard and working hard is quite vague when you think about it as a young person. When you are young you don’t really understand it but looking back that is probably the most valuable piece of information I have received: to work hard and focus on what you want. That is probably what I would reiterate to myself if I could go back.

8) If I could…speak to that child who is considering joining their local team but isn’t sure, I would tell them…
…that when you are that young, it is just about having fun. You should enjoy playing football and play with a smile on your face. Don’t play with fear. Have a good time, work hard and enjoy yourself.

9) If I could…only eat one item of food for the rest of my life, it would be…
…lobster. I like lobster, it is top. I don’t know what it is about it. It is just different and ever since I have tried it, I have loved it.

10) If I could…choose who would play me in the film of my life story, it would be…
…Idris Elba. I like him. Luther is one of my favourite series.

11) If I could…invite three guests around for dinner, it would be…
…Cristiano Ronaldo would be one. Jay-Z would be another. And probably Michael Jackson. With Jay-Z, he is known worldwide for what he has achieved in the music business and is a very well-connected man and Michael Jackson is Michael Jackson. No explanation is needed.

12) If I could…have a second dream job, I would be…
…I don’t think I have one. I am pretty happy with being a footballer. I don’t have a clue what I will do after my career is finished. I am young and it is early days so I have not got a clue what I will do next.

13) If I could…be one person for a day, it would be…
…Ronaldo again!
