After opening the scoring in Sheffield, Lionesses forward speaks about joy of semi-final victory over Sweden

Beth Mead took time out from England's on-pitch celebrations at Bramall Lane to give her thoughts on the the EURO 2022 semi-final win over Sweden.

The Lionesses secured their place in Sunday's Final at Wembley Stadium after a stunning 4-0 victory in front of a sold-out and buoyant crowd in Sheffield.

And it was Mead who got the scoring underway, striking England ahead after 34 minutes to settle the nerves after Sweden had made a lively start to the game.

Second-half goals from Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Fran Kirby made it a more comfortable win in the end, against a team ranked second in the world and less than a year on from collected Olympic silver in Tokyo.

“When the full-time whistle went, we didn’t know what to do," admitted Mead.

"It was an unbelievable atmosphere and we’re excited for the Final.

"There's been a lot of celebrations and a lot of dancing but what a night and a moment to celebrate and enjoy.

"When the third goal went in, you start believing but it's a bit blurry after that - what an incredible night and atmosphere again, I'm just very proud to be English right now."

"I enjoyed my goal and it came at a perfect time. Sweden came at us in the way we knew they would and Mary made some good saves early on. The game was quite cagey so it came at the right time.

"There was a lot of pressure on us and they had a few chances, so it was good to get ourselves in front.”

"It settled us and from there I thought we had the momentum and we went on and played some good football and scored some more goals."

The England squad will now return south, where they will begin their preparations for Sunday's showpiece at Wembley Stadium.
