James McAtee has been called up to join Lee Carsley’s England MU21s squad ahead of their 2023 U21 EURO qualifiers against Albania, Kosovo and Slovenia.
The 19 year old has made six substitute appearances for Manchester City’s first team this season and has starred for the Under-23 side in Premier League 2, scoring 18 goals in 23 outings and picking up the trophy for the competition’s Player of the Season.
“We really rate him highly,” Carsley said. “He can play anywhere: seven, eleven, ten, nine, eight. He's a good footballer. I was lucky to see him at City when I was there with the younger age groups. He's one we've kept an eye constantly.”

The Arsenal defender was named in Gareth Southgate’s 27-man selection last week but will continue his rehabilitation with his club.

However, Raheem Sterling, Kieran Trippier and James Ward-Prowse will arrive on Tuesday, as will Trent Alexander-Arnold following his participation in the UEFA Champions League final.
Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Sessegnon will miss England MU21s’ forthcoming U21 EURO qualifiers through injury.
Manchester City defender Rico Lewis has withdrawn from England MU18s’ squad for their four nations tournament in Zagreb and been replaced by Arsenal’s Bradley Ibrahim.
