Emma Coates' Young Lionesses make a winning start to their EURO qualifying campaign
England Women’s under-19s made a winning start to their UEFA Women’s U19 EURO qualifying campaign with a 5-0 win over Slovenia.

Emma Coates’ squad are in Slovakia for their first round of games in the 2022-23 competition, with the target being to reach next summer’s EURO Finals in Belgium.

And the Young Lionesses had a strong start at the Spišská Nová Ves Stadium, with Emma Thompson opening the scoring after two minutes from the penalty spot after she’d been fouled herself.

The striker, currently playing for Lewes on loan from Chelsea, then turned provider four minutes later to set up Freya Godfrey to make it 2-0.

And Thompson assisted again as England made it 3-0 just before the half-hour mark when Olivia McLoughlin scored to give her side a commanding position at the break.

Godfrey scored her second of the game seven minutes after the re-start, when she cut in from the left wing to strike home her side’s fourth of the game.

There was just three minutes remaining when substitute Freya Jupp finished well to complete the scoring by slotting a shot through the legs of onrushing goalkeeper Eva Kocijan.

England will be in action again on Saturday afternoon (4pm BST), when they take on group hosts Slovakia at the national training centre in Poprad.
