England men’s blind team were held to a draw by Argentina in Thursday’s IBSA World Championship group clash in Birmingham.
Adam Bendall’s side couldn’t find a way past the South Americans and were left waiting for their first goal of the competition following their opening game defeat against Germany on Tuesday.
It was a closely contested game throughout and both teams will feel they could’ve come away with a victory, but it wasn’t to be and the Para Lions will now be targeting a win in their game against China on Saturday.
England started the game well and created a good opportunity when an early shot from Roy Turnham’s flew just wide of the post.
At the other end, Ignacio Oviedo was presented with a chance in the area, which Dylan Malpas did well to save from close range when he was picked out by captain Angel Deldo with a smart pass.
Dan English then saw an effort well saved by the Argentine keeper Dario Lencina.
And it was Argentina ended the first half strongly though with Malpas denying Deldo’s shot on target before Nahuel Heredia saw his effort from a well-worked corner routine also collected by the England goalkeeper.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both nations making use of their substitutes in a bid to make the breakthrough.
Argentina came the closet to winning it though as Malpas saved his best save until last, as he somehow got a hand to deny Maxi Espincillo who embarked on a good run before firing in a low shot towards the bottom corner.
