A Land Down Under, with Keira Walsh

In the latest of our World Cup series, we hear from Lionesses midfielder Keira Walsh as she chats about Australia and settling in Down Under and at Barcelona

I’d never been to Australia or New Zealand before, so if someone mentioned Australia to me, the first things I’d think of would be the kangaroos, the Sydney Opera House, snakes and spiders and coffee too, as I'd heard the coffee in Australia is good.

So I’m looking forward to sampling that and I do like to get involved with our little coffee club in the squad. I go along more for the social aspect, as one coffee a day is enough for me and I'm not as avid a drinker as some of the other girls and Jill used to drag me along.

I'm just looking forward to experiencing the culture, because it's so far away from home and it's not the sort of place that you might get to visit that often.

Growing up, I remember I used to watch Neighbours every now and again, as it'd be on when I'd came in from school.

And then there's 'I'm a Celebrity...' of course, which my mum loves so we'd always watch that together and we obviously all watched it this year with Jill being in there.

None of us were surprised by what happened either. I remember saying to her at the EUROs last summer that if she retires she should definitely go on it, because she'd win.

She's got such a great personality and for us, it was great to see how the nation also got to see that side of her as well and loved her as much as we all do.

My favourite Aussie player is Alanna Kennedy. I get on with her so well, having played together at Manchester City. She's such a good person and super funny, as well as being a great player with an unbelievable strike and good technique. I still speak to her now so hoping she can have a good tournament in her home country too.

After the last few years, it's going to be a different challenge for us as a team, being so far away from friends and family. We'll have to adjust to that, but I'm just looking forward to something different.

I feel as though settling into new surroundings is something which my move to Barcelona last year has helped me with.

Naturally, it takes time and that's something you don't really think about when you’re in the process of moving clubs like I did.

It took me some time to settle into the environment and how they play football. People will say it's just about keeping the ball at Barca, but there's a lot more to it than that. You've got to be constantly on the move, especially in midfield - being an option all the time, giving an angle and knowing where your team mates are.

The girls there have all been super helpful though and I can't thank them enough for the way they've helped me in learning the Barca way.

I'm feeling confident and comfortable now and really loving the football and the games we're playing and I really enjoy the Spanish culture too, so I’m just hoping to bring that into the World Cup with me this summer.
