England head coach speaks after the Lionesses' opening game of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

Report: England v Haiti

Sarina Wiegman admitted she was just pleased to see England get off to a winning start in their Women's World Cup opener against Haiti on Saturday.

The Lionesses got their campaign in Australia and New Zealand underway in Brisbane and came up against a lively and talented Haitian team, who pushed Wiegman's team all the way.

It took a twice-taken penalty from Georgia Stanway in the first half to separate the teams and while England had opportunities to extend their lead, the Caribbean nation could also have found themselves level with Lionesses' keeper Mary Earps forced into a number of saves.

“It was a very hard game, I’m very happy with the three points," said Wiegman after the game.

"I think Haiti are unpredictable, they’re very transitional, that’s what they showed. We were struggling with that.

“I think we had a lot of possession but they were really tough in the duels and very quick, so we did create chances but we lost the ball and there were moments that we were not expecting.

“Overall, what we want to do is of course finish our chances and we did hit a penalty which is good because the win is the most important thing but we need the final thing in finishing our chances.

The squad will now move on from their latest World Cup base in Brisbane to Sydney, where they will be back to work on the training ground on Sunday ahead of next Friday's game with Denmark.

"We need to be better even in our possession game, a little faster game," added Wiegman.

“Sometimes the cross was too close to the goalkeeper who had a lot of courage too. Sometimes we had a moment where we might have had the last pass instead of shooting ourselves, little things like that.

“We were very close to scoring a goal so I hope the next game in open play we can score a goal.

“We now recover and go for the next game.”
