Head coach reacts to England versus Denmark in their second match of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

Sarina Wiegman stated she was very proud of her England team after they needed to ‘fight for the win’ against Denmark.

England won the game thanks to a stunning goal from Lauren James in the sixth minute of the match.

The Lionesses now have six points from six after two matches, which means they will qualify from Group D if they avoid defeat in their final group game with China next Tueaday, following China's victory over Haiti later on Friday.

Wiegman said: “I think we started well. We played well, scored that goal and then had a little stage in the first half where we lost balls we didn’t have to lose.

“Then of course we had this horrible moment with Keira [Walsh], she had to go off and in the second half it was a fight.

“She was out and we adapted to the situation, and we really had to fight for the win and that’s what we did so I’m very proud of the team.”

England dominated possession and enjoyed more shots on goal but Denmark still struck the post and forced Mary Earps into impressive saves during the course of the 90 minutes.

The Lionesses’ hopes of victory had suffered a major blow during the first half when the influential Keira Walsh was forced off on a stretcher due to a knee injury.

When asked what she could say on Walsh’s injury, Wiegman replied: "Nothing. It did look serious. If you can’t walk out of the pitch then it’s serious but I don’t know. We just finished the game.”

She continued: “During the game, you just have to move on and [even with] how horrible it is for her, you have to move on with the game and now it’s time to have a look at how she is and what the next steps are.”

Wiegman then added: “I think they (the players) did a great job. The team really picked it up but of course it’s not nice to see a player who very clearly needed to be subbed.

“That’s not nice but the team picked up really well and in the second half we had to fight for the win and that’s what we did.”
