England women’s under-19s kicked off their trip to Portugal with a 2-2 draw against the hosts.

Goals from Georgia Mullett and Freya Godfrey either side of half-time looked set to secure victory for the Young Lionesses before a late goal by Portugal.

Attention will now turn to Sweden on Friday (3pm GMT) before taking on the Netherlands on Monday (1pm GMT).

Portugal took the lead in the 14th minute when England gave up possession just outside their penalty area and Marisa Correia came inside and slotted the ball through the legs of Eve Annets.

The visitors equalised six minutes before the break when good pressure from Lexi Potter led to another defensive mistake and Mullett raced through on goal before delicately dinking the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

England then took the lead just after the hour mark when they won a penalty following a low cross by Araya Dennis and the Portugal defender blocked the ball with her arm when sliding with Michelle Agyemang.

Godfrey stepped up and found the bottom corner to the goalkeeper’s left.

But Portugal equalised in the final ten minutes when the ball was cut back to Ines Simas and she sent her shot into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.
