Young Lions draw with Wales in U19 EURO qualifier in Podgorica, Montenegro

England men’s under-19 were held to a second successive draw by Wales in their UEFA U19 EURO qualifying on Saturday.

The Young Lions, who were held to a 0-0 draw by group hosts Montenegro in their opening game last week, had to show their character and come back from behind in Podgorica.

After a goal-less first half, in which Simon Rusk’s team enjoyed the better of the limited chances, it was Wales who edged ahead ten minutes after the re-start.

It was Ben Lloyd who put the hosts in front as they broke quickly from an England corner with Omari Benjamin setting up the Swansea City midfielder.

Rusk made a double substitution five minutes later and it had the desired effect as Romain Esse levelled things up with 20 minutes left by finishing into the roof of the net from close range to play following a cross from Dominic Ballard.

It set up a grandstand finish with both teams looking for a victory and Luca Gunter in the England goal and opposite number Kit Margetson for Wales forced into saves.

But the teams couldn’t be separated despite some late pressure from England in stoppage time.

The Young Lions will now head into their final match against Austria on Tuesday knowing that they are likely to need a victory to be assured of a top-two place in the group table to progress to March’s elite qualifying round.
