The Young Lions make an impressive start to the season with a big win in Germany

England men’s under-17s kicked-off the new season with a 5-0 win against Mexico on Wednesday afternoon.

In the first of three games in Germany this month, Neil Ryan’s Young Lions were in action at the TuRU Stadium in Dusseldorf, where goals from Max Dowman, Andre Dike, Harry Howell (2) and Max Jenner sealed victory.

The Young Lions took a first-half lead when Wesley Okoduwa was wrestled to the ground in the area by a Mexican defender at the expense of a penalty. Dowman duly stepped up to dink his spot-kick down the middle to put England ahead.

And England doubled their advantage with another penalty five minutes before the break, when Dike was felled in the box. The West Ham United player dusted himself down to step up and take the penalty, slotting it to the keeper’s right and into the bottom corner.
England made it three penalties from three attempts five minutes after the restart, when Howell was fouled in the box. The Brighton & Hove Albion player took the penalty to put his side 3-0 up.

Howell added his second of the game on the hour mark, curling a fine free-kick over the wall and into the top corner with his left foot.

The final goal of the game arrived in the last minute when Jenner cut inside to see off two Mexican defenders, before firing home across the ‘keeper with his left foot.

Ryan’s team will be back in action with their second game of the trip when they play Israel on Saturday afternoon (3pm BST) in Duisburg.
