England MU21s: Find out more

Morgan Rogers starred in a superb attacking display as England men's under-21s dominated to a 4-1 victory over Austria in an encouraging performance at Kenilworth Road.

After being heavily involved in England’s early efforts, Rogers fired in from the spot to break the deadlock, only to see his effort cancelled out by Wolfsberger’s Thierno Ballo before the interval.

The Aston Villa starlet then finished delightfully to re-establish England’s lead after the break, making it a brace on the night.

It was an advantage they would only add to for the remainder of the contest, with James McAtee and Tom Fellows also getting on the scoresheet.

The win puts Ben Futcher’s men in fine stead going into key UEFA European U21 Championship qualifiers in October against Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Looking for the perfect start, England thought they might have had a penalty within the first 15 seconds as Liam Delap took a tumble in the area - only for the Ipswich striker to be booked for simulation by referee Stéphanie Frappart.

The Young Lions continued to dominate possession during the early stages but it was Austria who forced the first save of the game, with MU21 debutant James Beadle diving low to deny a dangerous free-kick effort from Christoph Lang.

England soon began to kick into gear and threatened with a chance of their own as Rogers danced past his man to play in Delap, who couldn't find the finish to beat Polster in net.

But in the 25th minute, England had a golden opportunity to take the lead as McAtee was fouled in the box - a panic move from Florian Micheler to concede the penalty after being expertly robbed of possession by Tyler Morton in the final third.

Rogers fired into the top left corner to make it three goals from four for the MU21s to give England a deserved lead.

However, Austria found a reprieve just ten minutes later, with Ballo firing in from range after Alex Scott was dispossessed in a dangerous area.

Forced into the break on level terms, England quickly went about re-establishing their lead after the restart and found success within four minutes.

Rogers pounced on a through ball from Samuel Iling-Junior before whipping in his second of the night, putting Futcher’s side back in the driving seat.

England continued to establish total control and added to their lead nine minutes later - this time it was Manchester City’s McAtee who crisply volleyed home from Lewis Hall's cross.

The Young Lions did not settle for their two-goal cushion and continued to hit the front, with Delap and Jamie Gittens having a handful of chances to add to the tally.

They then found reward in their efforts, netting a fourth through substitute Fellows, with the West Brom winger turning home from close range after another superb Hall cross in the 81st minute.

Marseille’s Jonathan Rowe thought he had produced England’s fifth to cap off a fantastic display late on, but saw his goal ruled out for offside.
