Anderson: We stuck together until the end
The midfielder was full or praise for Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane
Elliot Anderson said England’s togetherness was pivotal as they overcame a stubborn DR Congo side to reach the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Three Lions trailed until the final 15 minute at the Atlanta Stadium after Brian Cipenga opened the scoring early on, but a quick-fire double from Harry Kane was enough to send Thomas Tuchel's men through to the next round where they will face Mexico.
Anderson admitted England were expecting a tough test against the Leopards, but felt they got better and better as the game progressed.
“It was a good game,” said Anderson.
“It was tough. We knew what they were coming doing. It was exactly that, really hard to break down, and we just stuck by each other and went till the very end and thankfully, we got through.
“I think we're grew into the game, although I think first 20 minutes, we were poor, and then from there, I thought we were actually pretty good, just struggled to score.
“The keeper was amazing, fair play to him. The subs made a massive difference, so it was good.”
It was the quality of Kane which proved the difference in the end for England as he once again showcased his match-winning qualities.
His second goal, in particular, was a moment of individual brilliance as he arrowed an unstoppable drive into the roof of the net, while his first demonstrated his penalty box instincts.
Jude Bellingham was another who impressed in attack and Anderson said the rest of the team take confidence from knowing the duo will deliver when it matters.
“They're big game players,” he added.
“Look at these players, and we look at them to get us through the next round.
“We build the foundations, and try to get them the ball, and they'll do their stuff. I thought both of them [Kane and Bellingham], they were amazing today.”
