The England captain reflects on equalling Peter Shilton’s record for the most Three Lions caps

Harry Kane has admitted he enjoyed a “perfect night” after helping England to victory against Czechia on his record-equalling 125th cap.

The Three Lions captain scored twice - the 90th and 91st goals of his international career - and forced Vladimir Coufal to steer the ball into his own net as Thomas Tuchel’s men ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Wembley Stadium.

But while Kane’s goals earned England a third straight UEFA Nations League win, much of the focus was on the latest incredible milestone of his eleven-and-a-half years representing his country.

The Bayern Munich striker drew level with goalkeeping great Peter Shilton as the joint most-capped Three Lions player of all time after being picked to lead the line by Tuchel.

“It was the perfect night for me personally and also the team,” said Kane.

“Nice to finish it off altogether at Wembley. For me, just an extremely proud evening for sure.”

Reflecting on his first goal, which saw him finish off a flowing move from close-range, Kane said: “The way we moved in, playing one-touch football, the ball from Elliot [Anderson] into Morgan [Rogers] and then the first-hand cross was just as good as it gets.

“As a striker, you're just living your lives and waiting for those opportunities.

The skipper also discussed the squad’s development during the Nations League campaign, which saw two victories over Czechia, a 7-0 win against Croatia and a narrow 3-2 defeat at home to world champions Spain.

Kane said: “I think it started in the first game [against Spain], although it wasn't the result that we wanted.

“I still thought there were some really good bits in there and I feel like we built on that. It's never an easy camp coming off the back of a major tournament, the first camp back.

“This one's obviously four games, so we had to find it and we found it really quickly and that's the most amazing thing.”

Tuchel made a number of changes to the squad which reached last summer’s World Cup semi-finals and gave international debuts to Alex Scott and Rio Ngumoha over the last week.

Kane believes the growing competition for places will only benefit the Three Lions going forward as they look to go all the way in the Nations League and qualify for UEFA EURO 2028.

“There's always going to be competition for every spot,” Kane added.

“When you're here, it's about taking opportunities. Whenever you get minutes, whether it's 90 minutes, five minutes, whatever it is, do the best with that time.

“I think you'll see that from everyone in the squad, everyone wants to be a part of it, everyone wants to be in the team. And that's only going to make us better, for sure.”
