Gordon: 'It's a bit of a missed chance'

Anthony Gordon believes England are on the right track to compete with the best teams in the world, following their narrow 3-2 defeat against World Cup winners Spain in the UEFA Nations League.

In what was the first game for both teams after this summer’s tournament in North America, the crowd at a sold-out Wembley were treated to an enthralling clash.

After Spain took an early lead through Gordon's Barcelona teammate Lamine Yamal, England found a way back into the game and turned the contest on its head when Gordon equalised with a flowing counter-attack goal before captain Harry Kane headed the Three Lions in front.

And it could’ve been 3-1 in the second half, only for Kane’s mis-hit penalty to prove a pivotal moment before Spain hit back to swing the game back in their favour thanks to strikes from Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal.

“I think it’s a bit of a missed chance,” said Gordon after the game.

“I thought it was a great game to watch, with the quality of attacking play on show at the highest level. But in a game like that, mistakes cost you. You always feel like you’ve given it away rather than been beaten, to be honest.

“You could argue about it because they were as good as us and we were as good as them, but we just made a couple of mistakes.

“If Harry scores that penalty, I think it’s match point. I think it puts us in a great position to go on and get more. We were hungry for more; we came out to go for the throat, for the kill.

“Penalties happen. You’re never really going to miss one on purpose, so we’ll learn from that one.
