Ben Godfrey

The Everton defender was named in an England senior squad for the first time by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate in May 2021, as Godfrey was part of the provisional squad selected ahead of UEFA EURO 2020.

It came on the back of an impressive first campaign at Goodison Park, where the York-born centre-half became a firm fixture in Carlo Ancelotti's team.

Prior to that, Godfrey had also been a key player for the MU21s, helping the Young Lions to reach the 2021 U21 EURO Finals in Slovenia. Unfortunately, Aidy Boothroyd's side didn't progress beyond the group stage but that meant Godfrey was free to link up with the senior squad later that year as they prepared for their own EURO challenge.

After impressing in local school football, he began his career with hometown club York City and after coming through their youth ranks, he was playing first-team football as a teenager and quickly caught the eye of scouts from across the league. 

It was Norwich City who won the race for his signature and he joined the Canaries, initially as an academy player in 2016. He then spent the following year on loan with Shrewsbury Town, before returning to Norfolk and quickly becoming a first-team regular in the 2018-19.

His form there saw him first earn international recognition when he was selected for England MU20s in March 2019 and he featured in games with Poland and Portugal to start his cap collection.

By now, he was helping Norwich on their charge to promotion from the Championship and while his first season in the Premier League ended in relegation for the Canaries, his performances were heralded and it was during the summer of 2020 that Everton sealed his signing.
