The Young Lionesses will be led by John Griffiths for November's games in Portugal following departure of head coach

England women's under-19s head coach Amy Merricks has made the decision to leave the FA.

Merricks joined in April this year and last month helped the Young Lionesses to qualify for the second round of the 2024 UEFA WU19 EURO, winning all three round-one games.

Assistant coach John Griffiths has stepped up to lead the WU19s on an interim basis and is with the squad for a trio of games at the Algarve Cup, which started with a 2-2 draw against Portugal earlier today [Tuesday].

The Young Lionesses will now face Sweden on Friday [3pm, 1 December] before finishing up against the Netherlands next Monday [1pm, 4 December].

Kay Cossington, FA technical director, said: “John is a highly experienced coach and knows the WU19 group well. I am sure they will have a good camp this month as they prepare for the next round of qualifiers in the New Year, and he will ensure the players continue their positive development through the England pathway.

"We would like to thank Amy for her hard work during her time with us at St. George’s Park, and wish her all the best in the future."
