The Lionesses head coach happy with her team's performance as they reach EURO 2025 quarter-finals after win over Wales

MATCH REPORT: ENGLAND v WALES

Sarina Wiegman saw her England team seal their spot in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 quarter-finals, following a comprehensive 6-1 win over Wales in St. Gallen.

The Lionesses went into their final group match knowing that a win would be enough to take them into the knockout stages, and they responded in style, taking a 4-0 lead into half time thanks to goals from Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo.

Two further goals from Wiegman’s second-half subs Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones rounded off the victory, which now means the Lionesses will face Sweden in Zurich on Thursday evening (8pm BST).

And Wiegman was happy with the manner of her team’s performance all-round.

“Of course, [I’m pleased] that we won, that we scored six goals, and big parts of the game we dominated,” she said.

“And it was very clear we were going to win the game but of course, you need to keep the momentum but it was a very good game.

“We knew ahead of this tournament we knew this group was really hard, and then when you lose the first game of course there is a massive urgency to win the other two.

“Now, with the score between France and the Netherlands [France beat the Netherlands by 5-2], that wasn’t that urgent but you want to keep it on your own hands.

“So it gave us a lot of learnings again with the team and it brought us together after that first loss, so I think that is pretty good.”
Alessia Russo scored her first goal of the EUROs, and Wiegman said: "It is not so important who scores, she is a striker she wants to score goals. But playing well is the most important and then who scores is not that important, but it is nice that she got one."

The squad will now return to their basecamp in Zurich, where attentions will turn to facing the Swedes, a team who they drew with twice during the EURO qualifying stage and also have happy memories of beating them in the semi-final while en-route to the EURO 2022 title three years ago.

“They are always a team, they are always very powerful, they have speed up front and on the counter-attack, they are really good,” added Wiegman.

“I think it is a hard team to beat, they have done really well in the group, they have won three games.

“We’ll see, we’ll get ready, first recover from this one and then we go again against Sweden in Zurich.

“I am very happy. As far as I know everyone came fit out of this game, that is very important as we have three days to recover.”
