Trevoh Chalobah takes our camp life quiz
The England and Chelsea defender discusses friendships, his cookery skills and believing in yourself
PLAYER PROFILE: TREVOH CHALOBAH
After receiving his first senior call-up earlier this year, Trevoh Chalobah is back with his England teammates this week.
Having been recalled to the squad by Thomas Tuchel, the defender takes our camp life quiz to talk all things Three Lions.
What is one essential item you’re packing in your suitcase for a camp?
My Bible.
What about one luxury item?
My watch or my laptop. I YouTube a lot of sermons, a lot of Premier League highlights, a lot of football highlights and a lot of cookery stuff as well – I like to cook and learnings things.
How do you like to spend your down-time on camp?
Play a bit of PlayStation – I usually just play online with my mates – read my Bible or watch movies.
Who would you sit next to on a plane or bus journey to an England game?
Ezri Konsa. He’s so funny. Ever since I got called up for the first time, he made me comfortable and welcome and I’ve known him at club as well, playing against him. We play UNO!
What kind of character or personality would you say you are within the group and how would your team-mates describe you?
I would say I’m very calm and relaxed.
What is your favourite meal to eat on camp?
I would say pesto pasta with a bit of chicken.
What is your favourite part of training?
I’d say the small-sided games. It’s very competitive and it’s good fun.
Talk us through your pre-match routine.
Before I game, I would pray, read my Bible and listen to Gospel music. They would be my main three.
What kind of music do you listen to before a game?
My favourite artist is Naomi Raine. She’s very good – she’s an American artist. One of her songs is called Hallelujah – it’s very nice.
Talk us through your post-match routine.
After a game, I have a bit of food. Read my Bible and pray as well. I just chill and watch movies.
What is your favourite thing about being on camp?
Meeting up with a lot of people who are my close friends. I played with some players here when I was younger, so it’s nice to catch up when you don’t get to catch up at club because we’re at different clubs, so it’s nice to come together.
I’m close to Declan [Rice], Eberechi Eze, [Bukayo] Saka. You’re surrounded by the best in the country.
How would you sum up pulling on an England shirt and representing your country?
It’s an unbelievable feeling. When you get that call, it just shows the hard work that you’ve put in and that you’re getting recognised by your country. It’s something surreal. It means everything.
What is your favourite moment during your England career?
Winning the U19s EUROs – I think that would be my favourite. I remember I got injured in one of the group stage games and when they won the tournament, they had my shirt up when they were lifting the trophy. I wasn’t there because I was injured but my shirt was there.
It was a lovely reminder, so when they came back to the airport, I surprised them and ended up meeting the players and getting my medal. It was a special moment.
With the final two World Cup Qualifiers coming up this month and England having secured their place at next year’s tournament, what is your favourite memory of watching the Three Lions in the World Cup?
I would say the last World Cup [in 2022] and how well we did and how far we got. I remember it was Qatar and there was a break in the Premier League, so I was away with Chelsea on camp and I remember watching the boys.
What is one piece of advice your younger self would’ve given you now you’re in this position, playing for England?
I’d say don’t allow people to tell you that you can’t do something. I think when you’re younger, you have that mentality that you just want to play football but as you get older, you start to have a bit more knowledge.
Just having that childlike mindset from when I was young – just enjoying it for the sake of enjoying and not allowing the outside noise or situations to affect you.
Just believe in yourself and know that a setback is not the end of the world – it’s time for you to grow which is part of life.
