England’s Partially-Sighted team suffered a last-gasp defeat against Ukraine in the IBSA Partially-Sighted Futsal World Championship Final on Saturday, bringing to an end their dreams of lifting the trophy this year.
Duncan Gilchrist’s side looked as though they were going into extra time in Antalya, before Ukraine scored with just eleven seconds remaining to seal victory and another title in the Para sphere.
Ukraine took the lead with just over six minutes of the game played when a long-range shot from distance took a cruel deflection off Harry Gibbons to wrong-foot Jack Walsh and ricochet into the opposite corner.
And Ukraine doubled their lead when a well-worked corner saw Vadim Shvets back-heel to Robert Tremba, who fired home an unstoppable shot.
England took that momentum into the second half and completed their comeback to level things up with less than three minutes played, when Liam Spinks’ angled shot into the box from the right caught out the Ukraine defence and ‘keeper to nestle into the net.
And with both teams looking to find a crucial winner as the clock ran down, unfortunately it was Ukraine who edged it when the ball dropped to Shvets in the box and he made no mistake by smashing home from close range.
England: 1 Jack Walsh, 2 Paul McHugh, 4 Harry Gibbons, 6 Andy Cahill, 7 John McDougall, 8 Jacob Heasman, 9 Douglas Pratt, 10 Adam Lione, 11 Liam Spinks, 12 Bailey Pack, 13 Myles Chadwick, 14 Lucas McClay
Goals: Adam Lione, Liam Spinks
