Mead closes in on goalscoring charts
The England and Arsenal forward now has 39 goals in 77 appearances for her country
MATCH REPORT: ENGLAND 8-0 CHINA
Beth Mead is now just a goal away from becoming England women’s joint-fifth all-time top goalscorer.
The forward hit a quickfire double against China PR at Wembley in an 8-0 triumph to put her within touching distance of Fara Williams’ 40 goals in an England shirt.
“I like being in front of goal and getting goals so that was nice,” she said. “I thought we put together a lot of good goals tonight and put each other in really good spaces so I am happy to get them too.”
But it was all about the team performance for Mead, who spoke after the game in the capital.
“We were very good,” said Mead. “We have a habit of not starting well in games at the moment and we wanted to do that and did that tonight. It was nice to see lots of different goal scorers, lots of people getting minutes, and come away with a big win.”
Mead also made a nod towards some of the newer faces in the Lionesses’ ranks, with the likes of Lucia Kendall and Taylor Hinds introduced off the bench by boss Sarina Wiegman.
“It is a perfect time and opportunity to get them exposure at international level,” added Mead. “I thought the girls that came on brought great energy.

“We kept scoring goals. It is easy to take your foot off the gas sometimes in them types of game so it is good to see them get the minutes and the goals.”
And the Arsenal star explained just how much she enjoys playing under the Lionesses head coach, who registered her 50th win in charge of England tonight.
“She makes it look easy,” said Mead. “You said I do with my goals, but Sarina makes coaching look very easy, she is an amazing coach to play under and work for and you see that from how the team play under Sarina.”
Attention now turns to next week when the Lionesses round off the Homecoming Series with a game against Ghana on the south coast.
“It wasn’t our hardest game, we know that, but you play the team that is in front of you – you work hard and we made them look very average tonight,” she highlighted.
“You have got to take away little, different things from the game and we regroup for Ghana on Tuesday.”
