England squad update: Ollie Watkins returns to Aston Villa

Ollie Watkins has been ruled out of England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Latvia.

The Aston Villa striker has not recovered from the knock sustained against Wales at Wembley on Thursday evening and has returned to his club.

A squad of 22 will travel to Riga.

1.45pm, Saturday 11 October 2025

Jarell Quansah will miss England’s forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Latvia through injury.

The Bayer Leverkusen defender returned to his club as a precaution following Thursday’s 3-0 victory over Wales.

No further squad additions are planned at this moment in time.

Crystal Palace’s Romaine Esse and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Tom Watson have been added to the England MU21 squad ahead of this evening’s 2027 U21 EURO qualifier in Moldova.

However, Newcastle United’s Lewis Miley will play no part having withdrawn through injury.

Both Esse and Watson made their MU21 debuts in Kazakhstan last month.

Tonight’s qualifier in Chișinău (5pm UK time kick-off) is being streamed live on YouTube here.

Lee Carsley’s squad then welcome Andorra to Derby County’s Pride Park on Monday 13 October (7.45pm kick-off).

Norwich City’s Kellen Fisher has been added to the England MU21s squad.

The full-back joins up following the withdrawal of Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall through injury and Nico O’Reilly’s addition to the senior squad.

Fisher has previously been capped at MU20 level and was first called up to Lee Carsley’s squad last month.

The Young Lions are in 2027 UEFA U21 EURO qualifying action this camp with a trip to Moldova on Friday 10 October (5pm BST kick-off) before welcoming Andorra to Derby County’s Pride Park on Monday 13 October (7.45pm BST kick-off).

Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly has received his first call up to the England senior squad.

The 20 year old moves across from the MU21s squad and comes into contention for the Three Lions’ forthcoming fixtures against Wales and Latvia.

The inclusion of O’Reilly, who has been capped from MU15 through to MU20 level, follows the withdrawal of Reece James.

The Chelsea captain sustained an injury playing for his club over the weekend and has been ruled out of England’s October internationals following medical assessments.

Thomas Tuchel’s squad welcome Wales for an Alzheimer’s Society International at Wembley on Thursday 9 October (7.45pm BST kick-off) before travelling to Riga to face Latvia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday 14 October (7.45pm BST kick-off).
