Rogers: We want to make more memories
The England midfielder previews Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway
The Three Lions overcame playing at high altitude with 10 men for more than 40 minutes to inflict El Tri’s first ever World Cup defeat at Mexico City Stadium, emerging as 3-2 winners following a dramatic round of 16 tie.
There were more memorable celebrations after the game, with Thomas Tuchel’s squad joining the fans for another emotional rendition of Oasis hit Wonderwall following the full-time whistle.
Norway are next up for Thomas Tuchel’s side in the quarter-finals in Miami, and Rogers says he and his team-mates are ready to “go again” against Erling Haaland and Co.
Asked how difficult it is for the squad to turn their attention to Saturday’s game after the highs of beating Mexico, Rogers said: “I think quite easy because you want to make more [memories].
“Now that game is done, this is the next biggest game ahead. For a lot of us, this will be the biggest game we’ve been involved in, especially at a World Cup in the circumstances.
“The drive to make more and to go again is the biggest challenge, but I think it’s a challenge that excites a lot of this group.
“I think that was the message today in our first training session back, that we go for it again, we can still improve and get better.
“That’s the best thing about football. You can always improve on something, it’s never the finished article or the end of anything because there’s a game around the corner that’s going to give us different problems.
“We’ll have to step up in a different way, whether we play differently or whatever that may look like, we’ve got another challenge ahead and that’s the exciting part about being a footballer - it’s never done, it’s never the end.
“You can always change and alter, kind of attack a different challenge. So we’re ready, and we will be ready.”
Rogers also reflected on the scenes after the win over Mexico and how much the squad value the support they’ve received from fans in North America and at home.
Asked about the new tradition of signing Wonderwall, Rogers said: “I do know the lyrics. I don’t think you’re English if you don’t know the lyrics, to be honest!
“I think it’s such a known song, everyone has to know the lyrics. If not, you better learn them quick!
“Special. They’re memories that for a lifetime you realise how special they are, and you just want to soak them all in with the fans.
“I’ve not really seen it before [singing with fans at the end of games]. It’s a new thing for this tournament and we all talk about it after, and all watch them.
“You’re in awe of how many fans there are and how much it means to them, how passionate they are. To share that moment is very special and we all don’t take that for granted. We appreciate it so much, it means everything to us.”
