England's most memorable meetings with France
Look back at some classic games against France ahead of the World Cup third place play-off
England will face France for the fourth time at the FIFA World Cup when the two teams meet in the third place play-off on Saturday night.
After defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals, the Three Lions will look to bounce back against Les Bleus and win to secure their best World Cup finish in 60 years.
Ahead of the game in Miami, which kicks off at 10pm BST (5pm local time), we look back on five memorable matches against the two-time world champions.
England 1 France 1, EURO group stage, 2012
The second-most-recent tournament clash with France came in 2012, with the two sides meeting in their opening game of the UEFA European Championship in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Joleon Lescott’s 30th minute header put the Three Lions in front before the Manchester City defender’s club team-mate, Samir Nasri, equalised with a fine strike from outside the box.
Roy Hodgson’s side survived some late pressure to hold onto a point as they qualified top of the group, with both sides going on to be eliminated at the quarter-final stage.
England 2-0 France, International Friendly, 1992
It was a tale of two strikers at different ends of their England journey as the Three Lions beat France 2-0 in their warm-up for UEFA EURO 1992.
Alan Shearer, while he was a Southampton player before moving to Blackburn Rovers later that year, scored his first international goal from close range to put England in front.
Then Gary Lineker scored his 47th goal, his second-to-last for the Three Lions, after his first header hit the crossbar.
England 1-2 France, World Cup quarter-finals, 2022
The Three Lions’ most recent meeting with France came four years ago at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, with the two teams going head-to-head in the quarter-finals.
Aurélien Tchouaméni’s fierce, long-range effort gave Les Bleus the lead, but Gareth Southgate’s side were deservedly level thanks to a second-half penalty from Harry Kane.
England pushed for a winner but fell behind to an Olivier Giroud header with 12 minutes left, with Kane missing a late spot-kick to draw his side level and potentially force extra-time.
England 3-1 France, World Cup group stage, 1982
A match best remembered for England’s quickest ever goal at a World Cup, with Bryan Robson scoring a volley after just 27 seconds at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.
The midfielder was also on the scoresheet in the second half to put the Three Lions back in front after Gerard Soler’s equaliser, before Paul Mariner’s close-range finish sealed victory with less than 10 minutes remaining.
The victory was England’s first of three during the 1982 edition, but despite going unbeaten for the tournament they were eliminated at the second group stage after 0-0 draws with West Germany and Spain.
England 2-0 France, World Cup group stage, 1966
England clinched their place in the quarter-finals of the 1966 World Cup with a comfortable victory over France at Wembley Stadium, as more than 98,000 fans watched on.
Two headed goals from Roger Hunt, one either side of half-time, earned the Three Lions a 2-0 win on home soil as Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Charlton saw efforts of their own ruled out for offside.
The result sent France home at the group stage and set up a last-eight meeting with Argentina for England as they continued on their journey to lifting the Jules Rimet Trophy.
