Declan Rice sets Three Lions captaincy first
Midfielder achieves new milestone in his first FIFA World Cup game as skipper
Declan Rice wrote his name into the England men’s team history books as he captained the Three Lions to a 6-4 victory over France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 bronze final.
Wearing the armband for the first time at the tournament, the midfielder was instrumental as England edged a ten-goal thriller to record their best-ever finish at a World Cup on foreign soil.
Rice, who won his 80th cap at Miami Stadium, opened the scoring with a curling effort from distance after three minutes, before delivering the corner from which Ezri Konsa headed home the second as Thomas Tuchel’s men raced into a four-goal lead by half-time.
In doing so, the Arsenal man became the first Three Lions player to register both a goal and an assist in their first World Cup game as captain.
Only four other players have made a direct goal contribution in their first World Cup match as skipper, with Rice following in the footsteps of Alan Shearer, Sir David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Harry Kane.
Of that quartet, only Kane can match Rice’s two goal involvements, having scored twice on his World Cup debut as captain when England beat Tunisia 2-1 in 2018.
England players to score or assist in their first World Cup game as captain:
Declan Rice, 1 goal, 1 assist – France 4-6 England, 18 July 2026
Harry Kane, 2 goals – Tunisia 1-2 England, 18 June 2018
Steven Gerrard, 1 goal – England 1-1 USA, 12 June 2010
David Beckham, 1 assist – England 1-1, Sweden, 2 June 2002
Alan Shearer, 1 goal – England 2-0 Tunisia, 15 June 1998
Rice’s goal, a brilliant effort which started with him winning possession in midfield, was England’s second-fastest goal in a World Cup game.
The 27-year-old struck after two minutes and 14 seconds, which is only bettered by Bryan Robson’s goal 28 seconds into the 3-1 over France at the 1982 tournament.
With Thomas Tuchel making seven changes for the bronze medal match, Rice wore the armband in place of Harry Kane in Miami.
That makes him the 14th player to captain an England side at a men’s World Cup. The others were Billy Wright, Johnny Haynes, Bobby Moore, Mick Mills, Bryan Robson, Peter Shilton, Terry Butcher, Alan Shearer, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Harry Kane and Eric Dier.
He is the first Arsenal player to skipper England at a men's World Cup.
