What's next for England's Three Lions?

England wrapped up their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign last weekend, beating France 6-4 in the third place play-off to seal their best finish since 1966.

The free-scoring match in Miami brought an end to the Three Lions’ summer in North America, with Thomas Tuchel’s squad now enjoying a break before returning to club action.

But what’s next for the head coach and his players on the international stage? And when will we have another major tournament to look forward to? Here’s everything you need to know.

New-look international window

Instead of two two-game international windows spread across early September and early October, this year will see a new four-game window brought in.

The Three Lions will play four consecutive matches between 26 September and 6 October, before returning to action again in November for two more fixtures.

The Nations League

All six of England’s remaining games this year are UEFA Nations League fixtures, as the competition returns for 2026-27.

Tuchel and his players are in Group A3 of League A and they will face Spain, Croatia and Czechia home and away to decide who makes it through to the quarter-finals in March.

The Three Lions’ first game will be against World Cup winners, Spain, at Wembley on Saturday 26 September (7.45pm BST). The squad then head to Prague to face Czechia on Tuesday 29 September (7.45pm BST).

England take on Croatia, who they defeated 4-2 in their opening game of the World Cup, in Rijeka on Saturday 3 October (5pm BST). Their final game of the window is against Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday 6 October (7.45pm BST).

Tuchel will then call up his squad for two more games in November as the Nations League group stage comes to an end.

Firstly, the Three Lions welcome Croatia to Wembley on Thursday 12 November (7.45pm GMT), before wrapping up their campaign with a visit to face world champions Spain on Sunday 15 November (7.45pm GMT).

The semi-finals and final of the Nations League will be held across 9-13 June 2027. The host country is yet to be confirmed.

UEFA EURO 2028

After the excitement of the World Cup, the next major tournament on the Three Lions’ radar is in two years’ time as UEFA EURO 2028 comes to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Running from 9 June to 9 July 2028, the European Championships will be held across nine stadiums including Wembley, Newcastle’s St James’ Park and Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Despite being co-hosts, England will take part in qualifying for EURO 2028. UEFA have reserved two automatic qualification spots for the host nations, should any fail to qualify via the normal route.

The qualifying draw will take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Sunday 6 December 2026, with 12 groups or either four or five teams playing each other home and away.

Qualifying fixtures begin in March 2027 and end in November 2027. Group winners will qualify for the tournament, with runners-up either qualifying or going into play-off matches - in March 2028 - against teams from the UEFA Nations League.
