The England midfielder reflects on the draw with Ghana and his World Cup debut

Eberechi Eze has praised the mood within the England camp as they tackle the “long journey” of trying to add a second star to the shirt at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Three Lions were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana on Tuesday but remain top of Group L on goal difference having impressively beaten Croatia 4-2 in their opening game.

Thomas Tuchel’s men dominated for much of the game against the Black Stars at Boston Stadium and came close to scoring late on against Carlos Quieroz’s stubborn side.

And Eze, who made his World Cup debut as a second-half substitute during the game, believes he and his England team-mates have the right mentality to deal with any setbacks.

“It’s a long journey,” Eze said. “You can’t be too high, you can’t be too low.

“You’ve got to trust in what you’re doing in the present moment. We’re trying to do that, we’re trying to enjoy it as much as we can, and being confident of what’s to come.

“I’m trusting that what we’ve been doing, how we’ve been playing will put us in a good position to win the group, and as long as we hold onto that, that’s the main thing.”

After winning the Premier League title with Arsenal last season, Eze was thrilled to earn a call-up to Tuchel’s squad and is now targeting more minutes ahead of the knockout stage.

Asked about making his tournament debut, he said: “It’s another amazing thing that I’m grateful to God for.

“To be in the position, to be able to play, to help the team, to do what I can. It’s where I want to be, it’s what I want to be doing so massively grateful and hopefully there’s more.”

England have settled back into their Kansas City basecamp following the trip to Boston and are now in the middle of three days of recovery and training before facing Panama in New Jersey.

Eze is enjoying life at Swope Soccer Village and insists Tuchel’s squad remain fully focused on Saturday’s final group game, despite not getting the result they wanted against Ghana.

“It’s good being around fellow professionals and enjoying time together,” he said. “We know there’s a lot going on around us but we’re very focused on what’s going on inside.

“We’re enjoying that little bubble that we’re in and I think it’s important to look after that and hold onto that because there’s a lot of conversations about us. But as long as we can stay tight, that’s all that matters really.”
