Guéhi: Playing at World Cup ‘more than a dream’

The Three Lions defender spoke about what it means to represent England at the World Cup

Marc Guéhi explained that playing at the World Cup could not be a ‘dream come true’ for him, because he never thought it could become a reality.

The Manchester City defender came off the bench to make his FIFA World Cup 2026 debut in England’s opening win against Croatia, before returning to the starting XI against Ghana.

Having lifted the Emirates FA Cup at Wembley with Crystal Palace last year and then sealing a switch to City earlier this year, Guéhi has become a regular in Thomas Tuchel’s defence.

Ahead of England’s final Group L match against Panama on Saturday, the 25 year old spoke to the media, sat next to the Three Lions boss to chat about the game in New Jersey.

And Guéhi explained what it was like to be involved in a major international tournament while discussing some of the responsibilities he has taken on.

Guehi realises his ‘dream’

“I wouldn’t say it’s a dream come true, because I never expected to be in this position,” he said. “Every single day is a dream, more than a dream.

“To be in this position is a lot of responsibility and I feel like I have a lot of responsibility, not just to myself and my family, but for those around the world who do have this dream and want to achieve something that I’ve been able to achieve, to play in the World Cup.

“For those looking at me right now, it’s important that they know it’s more than possible.”

England have ‘one goal’

During the press conference, Guéhi was asked if it was difficult to sit out of England’s first game, before coming back into the team for the Ghana clash.

The defender remained adamant that it did not matter who plays, as long as the team plays well because the squad know what the target is.

“It wasn’t difficult,” he admitted. “I said before that, to be honest, it didn’t really matter who played, as long as the team does well.

“We’re all here for one goal and we all know what that is. As long as the team does well, that’s the most important.

“I’m glad to have been given the opportunity in the last game to help the team and take whatever role I’m given.”
