England's place in World Cup knockout stage confirmed

The Three Lions have guaranteed qualification to the World Cup Round of 32, and here's who they can face

England's place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage was confirmed without even playing the night before their final group stage match against Panama on Saturday 27 June.

Results elsewhere mean that Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions are guaranteed to at least be one of the eight best third-place finishers in the group stage, but they are in a strong position to be better than that.

The Three Lions are on four points from two matches, after an impressive 4-2 win over Croatia and a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Ghana, to leave them top of Group L.

In the final Group H games early on Saturday 27 June, Uruguay lost by 1-0 against Spain to finish in third place with two points while Cabo Verde drew 0-0 with Saudi Arabia to seal second-spot in the group.

This means England's qualification for the round of 32 was confirmed, as there are no longer eight teams who could finish on four points in third place and have a chance of beating England's record, and as a result, Tuchel's side are guaranteed to not be one of the four third-placed teams to miss out on the Round of 32.

Aiming for top spot

But England's ambition is to finish top of Group L.

They will do that if they beat Panama in their final group stage match, at 10pm BST on Saturday 27 June, and Ghana don't win by a higher margin in their final Group L fixture to edge the Three Lions on goal difference.

A draw against Panama could also do, if Ghana draw against Croatia in their match in Philadelphia at the same time.

If England win Group L, a 5pm BST kick-off awaits on Wednesday 1 July
