Hampton reacts to that save against Iceland
The England goalkeeper helped the Lionesses to preserve a clean sheet
MATCH REPORT: ENGLAND 2-0 ICELAND
Hannah Hampton was at her best to register her eleventh clean sheet for England in a 2-0 win over Iceland.
The stopper was called into action on the hour mark to deny Sandra Maria Jessen with a spectacular save – a game-changing moment as the Lionesses made it back-to-back victories in their FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 qualifying campaign.
“The team made it very easy for me to know where it is going, made it very hard for her to get a clean contact on the ball from the header – almost scripted where it was going,” explained Hampton.
“We knew we had to work on things from the last game in terms of cross and set-pieces – that was their threat. They had tall players who are good in the air and we let it slip in the last game so we made sure we got it right today.”
The keeper described the result at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground as a ‘good performance’ and she was full of praise for the England boss, Sarina Wiegman, speaking post-match.
“Does she need any more credit?” she said. “Sarina is unbelievably gifted at what she does. You don't win three Euros if you're not good at what you do.
“She knows how to get the best out of teams, she knows how to get the best out of you as a player and as a person. She gets to know you as a person and that makes you want to fight for her on the pitch and believe in everything she puts in.”
Hampton also looked ahead to England’s next test against world champions Spain in April.
“We know what we are capable of as a team,” she asserted. “We know Spain are going to be a tough opponent. Everyone is going to level it up even more with it being the Euros final rematch or the World Cup final rematch.
“It is going to be a lot of media attention but we don't let that drip into camp. We focus on ourselves and what we are capable of as a team.
“We have unbelievable strikers and midfielders and the defensive unit is always solid. As a team, we know we are fighting for everyone on that match.”
