Five standout stats from Thomas Tuchel's England squad
From Harry Kane's third World Cup wearing the armband to Jordan Henderson's seventh tournament, here is a breakdown of the team
Thomas Tuchel has named his squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and there are a number of records that could be equalled or broken and milestones that could be reached at the tournament.
Take a look at how Tuchel’s 26-man squad could make history this summer.
Captain Kane
England captain Harry Kane is set to be involved in his sixth major tournament, having been included in Tuchel’s squad.
The Three Lions forward, whose tournament debut came at EURO 2016, has skippered England at five of those tournaments: the 2018 World Cup in Russia; the delayed EURO 2020; the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the most recent EURO 2024 in Germany.
And this summer, he will match Billy Wright’s record of captaining England at three successive World Cups.
As it stands, Kane is on 112 caps – 13 short of Peter Shilton’s men’s record of 125 – and 78 goals. In terms of the World Cup, he has eight goals from eleven matches – two fewer than Gary Lineker’s England record of 10 World Cup goals.
Tournament veteran
Having missed out on the 2024 European Championship, Jordan Henderson will be taking part in his seventh major tournament – his first being EURO 2012 as the midfielder – then on the books of Liverpool – helped England to reach the quarter-final.
The 35 year old, who currently has 89 caps to his name, is just the second England men’s player to be named in a squad for four World Cups alongside Sir Bobby Charlton, although Charlton only played in three, so should Henderson reach the pitch in North America, he will make his own history.
He was also selected to represent England at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil; the 2018 tournament in Russia where the Three Lions reached the semi-final of a World Cup for the first time in almost three decades, and the most recent 2022 World Cup which was staged in Qatar.
World Cup record holder
Two members of Tuchel’s squad could overtake former England goalkeeper Shilton’s all-time national record of 17 appearances at the World Cup. Jordan Pickford and John Stones each sit on 12 appearances at the tournament.
Everton stopper Pickford has been between the sticks as England’s first-choice keeper since the 2018 World Cup when he famously helped Gareth Southgate’s side beat Colombia on penalties to book their place in the quarter-final.
And Stones will be appearing at his sixth major tournament, having made Roy Hodgson’s EURO 2016 squad but, an unused substitute, his tournament debut came in 2018.
Landmark appearances
There are milestone caps on the horizon for two of Tuchel’s players, including Bukayo Saka. The Arsenal forward could make his 50th cap out in the USA, currently standing on 48.
That means – should he feature in both of England’s pre-World Cup warm-up matches – the landmark could be reached as soon as Wednesday 10 June when the Three Lions face Costa Rica at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa before the tournament has even begun.
Saka’s international debut dates back to October 2020, when he made his senior bow at Wembley in a 3-0 victory against Wales.
Half a century
Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham is four caps shy of the same achievement, currently on 46 appearances for England and counting.
The Real Madrid midfielder could join the 50 club during the group stage of the tournament – as early as the Three Lions’ second match-up against Ghana in Boston, should he feature in both of England’s warm-up fixtures and the opening two group stage games.
Bellingham became the third-youngest player to represent the men’s team when he was handed his debut in November 2020 against the Republic of Ireland, aged just 17 at the time.
What's more, he would become the youngest England player to reach 50 caps, breaking Wayne Rooney's – who was aged 23 years and 159 days at the time – record, along with becoming the youngest player to feature at four major tournaments.
