Mexico City Stadium
Location: Mexico City, Mexico
Opened: 1966
Capacity: 72,766
England's second knockout game of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will take place at Mexico City Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico.
The venue has hosted four games so far this summer, including the opening game between Mexico and South Africa and the co-hosts’ round of 32 win over Ecuador. Sunday’s game will be its last of the tournament.
The stadium, which also hosted the opening games in the 1970 and 1986 World Cups, is the home of the Mexico national team as well as club sides Club America and Cruz Azul, although all three were forced to play elsewhere during a period of renovation which began in 2024.
It's affectionately and commonly referred to by its original name, the Azteca Stadium
The City
Mexico City lies at an altitude of 2,200m and is therefore cooler than Monterrey and Guadalajara, Mexico’s other two host cities.
The historic stadium sits around 12km outside of the city centre, requiring fans to use public transport to reach it from the main tourist areas.
England faced Argentina at Mexico City Stadium during the 1986 World Cup, while Brazil lifted the trophy there 16 years earlier after defeating Italy in the final.
Fan Parks
The FIFA Fan Festival Mexico City opened on 11 June and is scheduled to continue until 19 July, the day of the World Cup final.
Taking place at Mexico City’s Zócalo, the area will transform into a festival featuring live match broadcasts, local food, live music and special experiences.
Entry is completely free and there is no need to register in advance. However, entry will be denied if the venue has reached full capacity.
Supporters can purchase food and drinks from a selection of local and international sellers, with diverse food options including vegetarian and vegan dishes.
