Rico received his first senior call-up at the age of 18, when he was drafted in by Gareth Southgate for the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers with Malta and North Macedonia.
The dynamic left-sided defender had broken into the Manchester City season during the 2022-23 campaign, and quickly became a popular and trusted member of Pep Guardiola's squad as they enjoyed a treble-winning season at home and in Europe.
Having already been capped by England at MU16s, MU18s, MU19s and MU21s level, his emergence and performances in the Premier League saw him switch from Lee Carsley's Young Lions squad into the senior set-up for their final two qualifying games of the campaign.
Capable of also playing in midfield, Lewis first joined Manchester City's academy ranks at the age of eight before working his way through the age-groups until his senior breakthrough.
