FIFA WORLD CUP 2022: HOME

England’s World Cup squad were treated to a visit from former Three Lions captain David Beckham at their training base in Doha.

With the players preparing for their group stage games last month, Beckham came along to the Al-Wakrah Sports Club training centre to catch up with Gareth Southgate and the squad.

The England boss and Beckham were international teammates at two World Cups during their playing careers at France '98 and Japan and South Korea in 2002.

And Southgate took the opportunity to present Beckham, who won 115 senior caps for England and made his debut against Moldova in September 1996, with a personalised shirt containing his player legacy number of 1078.

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and LA Galaxy midfielder then took time to chat with the players once they’d completed their session on the pitch.

Among those was current skipper Harry Kane, who grew up in the same area of east London as Beckham, played for the same grassroots team in Ridgeway Rovers and attended the same secondary school in Chingford.

Bukayo Saka, who scored twice in front of Beckham during England’s opening game win over Iran, showed his polite side by asking Beckham’s permission to have a photograph with him.

And Beckham also took time out to speak with Trent Alexander-Arnold around some of his own memories of playing against Liverpool at Anfield for Manchester United.

The Three Lions are this week working towards Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final game against France, following their round-of-16 win against Senegal last Sunday.
