Hampton: 'We never say die'
The England and Chelsea goalkeeper played a starring role as the Lionesses overcame world champions Spain on penalties
REPORT: ENGLAND 1-1 SPAIN
Lionesses goalkeeper was Hannah Hampton was speechless at the full-time whistle in Basel as England were crowned European champions once again, beating Spain on penalties.
The Chelsea stopper produced two saves in the shoot-out to help Sarina Wiegman’s side achieve victory, denying Spain’s Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmatí from the spot.
And Hampton was struggling to describe the action that unfolded on a historic night in Switzerland.
“It’s been unbelievable, incredible,” said Hampton.
“We’ve shown during this tournament that we can come back when we go a goal down, we have that grit, we’ve got English blood in us.
“We never say die and we just keep going and we did that today.”

And Lionesses boss Wiegman rallied the troops with a motivational speech, as Hampton explained.
“This is England, this is our moment,” repeated Hampton, when asked what the England manager said to her players.
“We’ve dug in for the 120 minutes, we’ve done what we needed to do to keep Spain.
“It was just one kick, that was it.”

Amidst all the dramatics of a penalty shoot-out, Hampton lost track of the scoreline when Chloe Kelly began her long walk up to the spot to convert the decisive penalty which won it for England.
“When Chloe stepped up, I was miming a kicking motion and said, ‘if she scores, do we win?’” recalled Hampton.
“I had completely lost track of what was going on.
“They kept cheering at me and yelling at me and I didn’t know what the answer was but as soon as she ran off, I thought that’s it, ‘we’ve won’. I can’t believe it, I don’t think this is going to sink in for a while.”
