Pro commentary meets grassroots football
Legendary commentator Clive Tyldesley and former England striker-turned pundit Darren Bent visited grassroots club Bushey & Oxhey FC in north London, to capture the joy of grassroots football in a heartwarming video.
Clive and Darren can be seen interacting with the kids, delivering playful team talks and providing ‘expert’ pitchside analysis to every pass, tackle and goal.
The video has been released ahead of the first of two Silent Support Weekends this season, with our initiative designed to promote the true joy of football by inviting spectators to support only with applause and leaving the talking to the coaches and players.
Clive and Darren lent their unmistakeable voices to the campaign by taking an element normally reserved for the professional game, commentary, and bringing it to a grassroots setting, as Bushey & Oxhey FC’s U7s teamed up with those from its sister club, Garston Ladies FC, for a game.

Grassroots Football Meets Professional Commentators
“Commentating on a grassroots football match was certainly a new experience for me,” said Tyldesley.
“It came with a unique set of challenges but what shone through was just how much love all the children had for the beautiful game, the smiles never left their faces the whole time we were there. I hope the Silent Support Weekend encourages everyone on the touchlines to reflect on how their presence and positivity can help nurture that joy.”
“I remember the first time I played in a professional game that was broadcast on TV, and this really brought those feelings of joy back,” added former Ipswich, Charlton Athletic, Spurs and Sunderland striker Bent.
“Grassroots football is where I started my career so I know exactly how important it is, and how vital it is for those kids involved to enjoy the experience with support from the sidelines that lifts them up rather than adds pressure.”
England Football’s Silent Support Weekend is designed to give young players the chance to find their voice on the pitch, make their own decisions, and enjoy the game without distraction from the sidelines, emphasising that the sport's true joy lies in fostering friendship, support, and collaboration.
This year, Silent Support Weekends will run across 15-16 November 2025 and 14-15 March 2026.
