Keira Walsh: 'An incredible result'
It was a night to remember for the stand-in Lionesses skipper
Keira Walsh described her delight at joining the 100 club in England’s 1-0 victory over Spain this evening.
The Chelsea midfielder became the 15th Lioness to reach a century of caps, leading the team out as captain in Leah Williamson’s absence.
“It's not something I ever thought would be possible,” said Walsh. “Every time I pull on an England shirt, I’m so grateful.
“To have done it 100 times, I never take it for granted and it still feels the same as when I put it on the first time.”
The European champions met the world champions at Wembley for the first time since the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 Final, when England went back-to-back in Basel.
And Sarina Wiegman’s team, who also beat Spain 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in February last year, put in an impressive performance to make it three wins from three in their 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
"I think everybody knows you can't go toe-to-toe with Spain for possession,” explained Walsh. “They’re unbelievable at that.
"Our plan was to sit in a low block and when we had a chances to forward, it was to do that. I think we did that exceptionally well tonight.
"At the end, they’ve got chances and they’ve got some unbelievable players but we really stuck to it and we played as a team tonight and it was an incredible result for us."
Walsh was also full of praise for Hannah Hampton, who pulled off a spectacular stop to preserve England’s lead in the second half.
"She's an unbelievable goalkeeper,” added Walsh. “I'm not surprised but still, to do it in front of this crowd in such a big game shows her talent.
“I think every single one of the back line and everyone in front, we were all working super hard and together and that was the main thing tonight that we wanted to get out of it.”
